Based on an old photo from a trip to Germany about 25 years ago, I attempted to use gouache as the medium on a piece of cotton rag matte board. It took a number of coats to get the true opaque effect however I like the resulting velvety surface. I plan to try this in my sketch book.

Not sure about the technique, but am really impressed with the painting.
Unfortunately I've only used gouache on bainbridge board, and mostly as solid flat colours. Occasionally I have used it in a watercolour style of painting, but I find it can leave residue on the paper when its dried.
