Sybaris Bistro, Albany

This is one of Albany's best restaurants. I am planning to create illustrations of other businesses in the Corvallis/Albany area.

Sophie, Ping & Pong (For our 2009 Xmas card)

I made a pencil drawing of the dogs and then enhanced them in Illustrator. This is much easier than trying to photograph them together.

More Sheep (Oil Painting)

Another 16X20 painting from the day at the OSU sheep barn last summer. Counting them puts me to sleep.

Benton County Courthouse (Oil)

I previously made a watercolor painting similar to this. I sold it this summer so I decided to do it again as a large oil painting (18X24).

Laura (Oil)

Another painting redone. This is a portrait of Laura, one of our favorite models, as she posed for us at the 2008 daVinci Days. Not yet a great likeness but I am getting closer.

Independence (Oil)

From a year ago, I decided to redo this painting. It is 9X12. Still not my favorite, but better. I used my new studio lights with double polarization. The result was a perfect exposure the first time with almost no reflections.

Borgo Pass Vineyard (Oil Painting)

This is a painting from a Vistas & Vineyards event this summer. It is 16x20 and I am in the process making a 20X24 frame for it. I am saturating my colors far more than in the past however the actual painting is not quite as bold.

Siuslaw River Bridge, Florence, Oregon (Oil)

I made this painting during a V&V trip over a year ago and decided to repaint it along with a number of my other early oil paintings. I now try to "push" the color much further and also use much thicker paint.

Deepwood Estate, Salem (Ink Drawing)

This drawing of the Deepwood Estate in Salem was made with a 3Xo Rapidograph pen on Arches 140 Cold Press watercolor paper. This is very time consuming and I subsequently had to scan it at 1200dpi in order to capture the details on the digital file.

Boccherini's Coffee & Tea House, Albany, OR

Located on the Flinn Block in Historic Downtown, Boccherini's is becoming an Albany landmark. It was recently reopened.

Mission Mill - Oil Painting

This is another painting showing one of the alleys at the mill. It is based on a photograph I took a few weeks ago. Again I used primarily a painting knife.

Trucks at Borgo Pass Vineyard - WC Sketch

About a year ago ago I made a small WC Sketchbook using a sheet of Arches 140CP paper. Since I am not always very busy when working at the Art In The Valley Gallery, I decided to spend my time making small 5X7 sketches. I am using a watercolor set that I always take with me but rarely use. This image is based on a photo taken at a recent V&V trip.

Albany, Oregon Riverfront (Oil)

Two weeks ago we were painting along the Albany riverfront. It was very cold and only a few painters showed up. I completed this painting after the paint-out. It was done entirely with a painting knife.

OSU Sheep Barns (Oil Painting)

Wednesday (Sept 23) we went to the OSU Sheep Barns to do some painting. I arrived too late to paint but I did get a few shots from which I later completed this oil painting. It is 16X20 on canvas board.

Benton County Courthouse (Illustration)

This was my preliminary drawing which I decided to keep in its rough form because it creates an interesting effect. The courthouse is the most prominent structure in Corvallis.

Old World Deli Illustration

The Old World Deli is a well established (since 1977) Corvallis eatery which also includes the Oregon Trail Brewery. It has a European atmosphere complete with a brick floor and artwork on the walls and ceiling. I always wondered who belonged to those shoes in the loft window.

Deepwood Estate, Salem (Oil Painting)

Deepwood Estate is Salem Oregon was built in 1894. It is a Queen Anne style home surrounded by English gardens. In this painting I did distort the house somewhat in order not to violate some ancient copyright and because I like to do that anyway. This site was one of the Vistas & Vineyard locations this year.

Holstein House, Ink Drawing

On Wednesday we spent the morning painting and drawing the Holstein House and Gardens. I started this drawing on site and then worked on it at home. I am not yet sure how to treat the bushes in front, or leave them alone.

Water Street Market Illustration

I made this illustration for Harry & Annette, the owners of the fish market located in this building. Some people are accusing me of having far too much fun doing these illustrations.

Art In The Valley Illustration

Art In The Valley is a small cooperative gallery in Corvallis. This illustration shows what would happen if the Guggenheim Foundation acquired the gallery.

Whiteside Theatre Illustration

This is an illustration based on a previous sketch and watercolor painting. These illustration make really nice and bold posters and cards. I plan to make many more representing landmarks in the local region.

Women's Center OSU (Illustration)

I just completed this illustration for the OSU Women's Center. It will initially be used as note cards for the Center. I plan to make illustrations for other OSU departments.

Whiteside Theatre Inside/Outside Illustration

This is an illustration of the Whiteside Theatre I made for the Whiteside Committee. They are involved in finding the funds necessary in order to restore the theatre. The actual "Grand Opening" is probably a few years away. I started with a pencAdd Imageil sketch which I then scanned into my computer and used Adobe Illustrator.

Silver Falls Lodge

For the past three days Vistas & Vineyards was at Silver Falls State Park. I made an oil painting as well as this sketch of the Lodge. The weather was great, but painting waterfalls was a real challenge. I may still attempt one in the future.

Watercolor- Education Hall, OSU

At the recent Art Guild Clothesline Sale I was asked by two people to make a painting of Education Hall on the OSU campus. This is one of the oldest buildings on campus and is presently being renovated. This is how I would like it to look after the renovation.

Finley Wildlife Refuge

We painted at Finley Wildlife Refuge south of Corvallis. This is an old smoke house that is a registered historical building.

Alsea Falls with Vistas & Vineyards

Today we visited Alsea Falls and the weather was perfect. The group appears to be getting larger every week and people are coming from further away. Most of the painters were at the falls or along the river. I started a watercolor of the falls and another of Doyle painting. After I got home I finished the first painting with a good dose of gouache and ink.

Old World Deli Ink Drawing

While at our weekly critique group meeting at the Old World Deli last week I started this drawing. I used my 3X0 rapidograph for the entire image.

American Dream Pizza & Francesco's Gelato

Another illustration of a Corvallis landmark, right across the street from the Art In The Valley Gallery. I often sketch outside when business is slow and I always get hungry when I do this. I used Adobe Illustrator to enhance my sketch.

Featured Artist - Art In The Valley Gallery

In June I was the featured artist at the Galley. The show title was "Benton County Landmarks is Watercolor and Oil." This is a view of the paintings, minus the painting of the Benton County Courthouse which was sold.

Larwood Covered Bridge (Drawing)

Yesterday we went to Larwood Bridge for a paint-out. I ended up making a somewhat wonky drawing of the bridge in ink. It is 7X10 on Arches CP Paper. We had about 25 people attending and it was a great day. The Bridge is about 15 miles east of Albany, OR.

The Flinn Block, Albany, OR (Drawing)

After our recent paint-out in Albany I decided to try a drawing of the Flinn Block which is the heart of Old Town.
So far it is in graphite, however I plan to ink it and possibly create a watercolor version.

Albany, OR Back Alley (Watercolor)

This week Vistas & Vineyards painted in Albany's Old Town. While most of the group was painting in the park by the river, a few of us were more interested in the local buildings. This started as an ink sketch using a rapidograph pen, it soon turned into a watercolor. At 1 pm when we all met for a critique this painting was in its "ugly" phase however I was later able to rescue it, at least somewhat. Anyway it was fun to do. It is 7X10 on Arches cold press paper.

The "Get Away" Car (Oil)

While in Astoria for the WSO convention a few weeks ago we ran into a number of old cars that were taking part in celebrating the anniversary of an old theater. I saw this fellow sitting in this car and asked to take a picture. This is based on that picture.
It looked like a "get away" car from an old movie. Maybe it was since it turned out he was not the owner of the car.

Grass Roots Bookstore (Illustration)

I created this image from a pencil sketch placed into Adobe Illustrator and then colored.
It is for cards to be sold at the bookstore. The store is located on 2nd St in Corvallis between a shoe store and a furniture store as you can see. The building is owned by the IOOF.

Schreiner's Iris Gardens (Oil)

This was the second Vistas & Vineyards outing at Schreiner's Iris Gardens north of Salem. I wanted to paint a single flower because the place is somewhat overwhelming with flowers. This is an oil painting on a small 6X8 canvas. I also completed some ink sketches. We has about 20 painters attending.

Engine #5 - Avery Park, Corvallis (Watercolor)

This was the first Vistas & Vineyard trip for the year (May 13). I sat in front of the engine and made a drawing on watercolor paper with pencil and then went over it with my Rapidograph 3X0 ink pen. It started raining so I later completed the watercolor painting at home. It is on a quarter sheet of Arches 140 cp paper.

"Moonlight" Prince Edward Island

This watercolor is based on a photograph I took on a trip to Canada in 2007. It was a church in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The moon was reflected in the glass of the front entry. This is probably one of the most detailed painting that I have made to date.

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

This past weekend I visited my daughter (the glass blower) in Seattle. I made this image during a tour at Pilchuck Glass School. It appears that everyone in Seattle is a glass blower. You can see her work at http://www.jkbglass.com .

Mission Mill, the Oil Painting

This is an Oil Painting made from the sketch that I previously posted. It is on a 12X16 canvas board. We plan to return to Mission Mill at a later date in order to make more drawings.

Little Putt-Putt in Watercolor

I just completed my latest watercolor of this little tractor that I discovered at a previous Vistas & Vineyards paint out. Hopefully I included all the necessary engine parts so that it will start. Yes, it has been out in the sun too long, and so have I.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Depot Bay Bridge (Oil)

I originally painted this image in watercolor however I never liked it so this is the oil version. I used both palette knife and brushes for this 12X16 painting. I previously also painted a less "wonky" version in oil.

Friday, April 17, 2009

Mission Mill Caricature

At the recent SketchCrawl I started a caricature of the mill. I finally finished the sketch in ball point pen and marker. I may later turn this into a painting. I believe that perspective in highly overrated.

Pineapple Watercolor

I have been working on this watercolor for the past few days. I got the idea from a DVD by Sue Archer called "Commanding Color". My wife bought the pineapple and I photographed it on the kitchen windowsill in the morning light. Maybe an artichoke will be next.

SketchCrawl 22 -Mission Mill Museum

Yesterday at the SketchCrawl I met up with Max and Lola at Max's Bookbinding shop at the Mission Mill Museum in Salem, OR. We had a great day sketching and sharing stories.
This is one of the Mill buildings as seen through his shop window.

Art In The Valley

I have now been a member of the Art In The Valley Cooperative Gallery since January. Often there are quiet periods during which I sketch at the desk. This is a view of the gallery interior from the desk.

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

This is my first oil painting done entirely with palette knife. More painterly without having to clean brushes and use a medium. The only thing left to do is cut off my ear, or not!

Open Studio Night OSU 090305

Open Studio at OSU Fairbanks Hall happens twice a week, short poses on Wed and long on Thurs. This is a sketch from last night. The artists are often more interesting than the model.
