Philomath College - 16X20 Oil Painting
This is a new 16X20 version in oil of an older watercolor painting. I painted it entirely with only yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson and white. No need for all those other colors. The building is the old Philomath College, now the Benton County Historical Society.

1974 Harley in 12X16 Oil
At the Borgo Pass Vineyard I found this old Harley. They also had a sawmill, old cars, tractors as well as some very unique buildings. All great subjects for painting. This is my fourth painting there.

Yaquina Bay Bridge - 18X24 Acrylic
I made this painting following an outing to Newport, Oregon. We were at the south end of the bridge and this painting resulted from a number of sketches. Obviously this viewpoint is from the middle of the bay, about 30 feet away from the bridge. This month is the 75th birthday of the bridge which is sometimes called "The Green Lady".

Two Acrylic Paintings at Finley Wildlife Refuge
The Finley Wildlife Refuge is just south of Corvallis, OR. The first is a smoke house that is a registered historic building. The second is the Fiechter House, the carriage house and a large red barn in the distance.

Out To Pasture - 16X20 Oil Painting
I have always been interested in one of the old tractors at the Detering Nursery named "Little Putt-Putt". This is my latest painting featuring this tractor. I call it "Out to Pasture".

Ford Wonkster - 20X24 Oil Painting
I was at the Philomath car show last week and saw this really nice 1929 Ford Roadster. I always wanted one of these. So I now have the next best thing, and it needs no maintenance or insurance, maybe just some more oil.

Beazell Memorial Forest-12X16 Acrylic
Another outing with Vistas & Vineyards. This was after a lesson on perspective. This is spherical perspective (or just wonky).

Mirror Lake, Yosemite
Another view of Mirror Lake in Yosemite. It is a 9X12 oil painting completed almost entirely with a painting knife.

Halsey Paper Mill - Two Views
The Halsey Paper Mill is the last active paper mill in Oregon. We recently visited a site near the mill for a paint-out. I first made a semi-realistic painting in acrylic and subsequently a distorted ("Wonky") version in oil. Reality is obviously highly overrated.

Paintings at Tyee Vineyard (with Erick Sandgren)
Last week we had a workshop with Erik Sandgren at the Tyee Vineyard. I made a painting of the Tasting Room as well as of the freshly cut hayfield. I am also showing an initial ink drawing of the field which Erik suggested I frame.

Buggy at Thompson's Mill - 12X16 Acrylic Painting
At our paint-out two weeks ago I painted an aerial view of the mill, however I also made a sketch for this painting. I relocated the buggy from its home in the garage in order to complete the composition.

Datura "Metal Black" -12X16 Oil Painting
Last week our paint-out was at the Thyme Garden Nursery where I planned to paint Thyme. Unfortunately Thyme is so small that I had a hard time even seeing it much less developing a composition. So I went into the greenhouse and painted something more substantial.

Thompsons Mill - Birdseye View (16X20 Acrylic)
This mill is near Shedd, Oregon and I painted it on a recent Vistas & Vineyards event. This is not your typical Plein Air image and everyone wanted to know how I got this perspective. I told them I was sitting on a cloud. They thought I was "high." The mill dates back to the 1860's and has a turbine instead of a water wheel, however I felt I had to include a wheel.

My first digital finger painting
This took me about 20 minutes using the Brushes application on my new Ipad2. The car is a 1940 Ford "Woody" I saw in Albany last week.
I have a video of the process at:

Yosemite Valley Entrance, 16X20 Acrylic
We recently returned from our trip to Yosemite National Park. After 4 days in the valley we returned with hundreds of photos and a few sketches ready for painting subjects. We also discovered that free painting workshops are conducted in the valley all summer long.

This is a small 7X10 painting in gouache. I am continuing to explore this medium. This house was built in 1892 and is in the Queen Ann style with Stick/Eastlake ornamentation.

Garlands Nursery - 9X12 Acrylic Painting
Our first Vistas &Vineyards paint-out of the year was at Garlands Nursery in Corvallis. It was also the first really nice warm day of the year. This is the entrance to the nursery done in my "wonky" style. It was suggested that I get my eyes fixed!

Disciples House, Corvallis
The Disciples House is located across from the Arts Center and Central Park in Corvallis, Oregon. In its present incarnation it is used as a rooming house for OSU students. I have made several drawings and paintings of this building in the past. This twisted view is on a 16X20 canvas painted in acrylic. Before I added the color it looked very much like a Charles Birchfield.

Germany Street Scene (Gouache)
Based on an old photo from a trip to Germany about 25 years ago, I attempted to use gouache as the medium on a piece of cotton rag matte board. It took a number of coats to get the true opaque effect however I like the resulting velvety surface. I plan to try this in my sketch book.

Huey, Dewey and Louis (16X20 Oil Painting)
This is an update of a previous painting. It appears that I never actually finish a painting until it is sold, thus leaving me with a large collection of work in progress.
